So much deliciousness, so little time!

We have been blogging our food adventures for nearly four months now. It’s been an exciting experience and we have learned more than I ever expected. For instance, we know that a kumara is a sweet potato, that Russian pancakes are called blini and that pao de queijo is amazingly delicious! We have also learned that Mr. N likes to crack eggs, Miss A is an excellent whisker, that dad can stomach a sweet potato and that I like curry. However the thing that amazes us most of all about this adventure is the number of amazing bloggers with such creative content and wonderfully delicious recipes. Life is far too short for the amount of absolute goodness in this world.

In the past few weeks we have been humbled by and grateful to a few fellow bloggers that have highlighted and honored our site. Kay the creator of Pure Complex, a wonderfully creative, diverse and insightful blog passed along the Versatility Award. This honor means a lot considering that Kay keeps one of the most versatile blogs I read. She has the uncanny ability to find some of the most beautiful and thought-provoking concepts and images that I otherwise would never see; and she writes with both grace and honesty. Virtually Party Bound

Today was one of those days that we were all going in different directions, and mom and dad both had a bit of work stress. That’s why I was so grateful for the fun distraction. One of my favorite bloggers, Laura at Manna & Quail, is hosting a virtual dinner party on Friday night. As we’re always up for a good party, we didn’t want to pass this one up. The party’s theme is spring, and it just so happened we were planning to make one of our favorite spring/summer recipes tonight. It’s a healthy, quick and flavorful veggie dish – Portobello Pizzaiola.

We started with these fresh ingredients:

chopped yellow peppers, red peppers, a red onion and Portobello mushrooms. We also chose a petite harvest grain loaf and a petite ciabatta square, but any fresh artisan bread will work. Continue reading

Making Ourselves at Home

We’ve been in our new house and new neighborhood for a few months, but today was the first day that it truly gave me the feeling of being at home. A warm front came through and the windows went up for the first time since we moved in, bringing in the smell of spring and the laughter of the several six to eight year old boys that were running through, in and out of, and around our house. It was a moment that brought a little tear to my eye, watching Mr. N run outside to play at the ball field with his new neighborhood friends. I tell ya these little ones are growing up too much this week!

It also felt like a “home” as the aroma of a big Sunday dinner mixed with the scent of on-coming rain in the air. And for that big Sunday dinner, one more trip back to New Zealand. New Zealand is world-famous for its lamb dishes, so the choice for tonight was an easy one – Rosemary and Honey Lamb Shanks.  Continue reading

Round and Round We Go

It’s my turn to pick our next food adventure. I’ve narrowed it down to three places that I’m most interested in (today at least). The first is Jordan. My best friend leaves for a Jordan/Turkey adventure this weekend, so this seemed like a natural choice. (Be safe and have fun SusieQ!) The second is South Africa. Last week I watched the season finale of the Bachelor (horrible reality television I know) and I was in awe of the South African landscape. It was not at all what I expected. I would love to travel there someday, but for now our food adventure will have to suffice. And lastly, my third choice is New Zealand and mainly because we haven’t tried food from that part of the world yet. Since I’m feeling indecisive this week (and insanely busy with work) I decided to put the next food adventure destination up to vote. Let us know where you’d like to go….

Mr. N Keeping it Real – and Safe

In lieu of recent events (Mommy burning her thumb on the baking tray), Mr. N thought it would be a good idea to share his “Kitchen Safety Tips.” Unlike Miss A (who often breaks rules 11, 12 and 19), Mr. N is quite concerned about his safety and the safety of others. And he’s often quick to point out when Miss A is violating any of the rules below. Enjoy!

1. Be sure to wear good oven mitts.

2. Kids shouldn’t touch raw meat – and if they do, they need to wash their hands.

3. Be sure to wash your hands before and after cooking.

4. Wash your hands after cracking eggs.

5. Put long hair into a pony tail.

6. Kids should never touch the stove or oven.

7. Don’t touch the dish disposal.

8. Only chop with a sharp knife with a grown-up.

9. Let food cool before sampling.

10. No more than one person on one stool and be careful.

11. No standing on the kitchen table.

12. No climbing on the counters.

13. Be sure to wash the counters before and after cooking.

14. If you spill ice out of the ice maker, pick it up off the floor.

15. Don’t leave cabinets or drawers open or you can bump your head.

16. Make sure food isn’t moldy or expired.

17. Do not put your hands near the inside of the blender.

18. Don’t touch the blade part of a knife.

19. No running in the kitchen.

20. Have fun!
