One More Pie

It is now officially the holiday season, and with that, we bring you our giveaway winners!

First here is one last pie recipe for you, which also happens to make use of our last NY cherries. We’ve now shared traditional pies, lattice pies and a rustic one-crust pie. This time, we’re going with an oat crumble topping.

Crumble toppings are great for fruit pies or cobblers. They are often a mix of ingredients, sometimes oats, other times nuts, but usually with butter and sugar! This particular recipe is a mixture of oats, flour, brown sugar, a touch of cinnamon and butter. The crumble topping is perfect when melted and crusted over a hot fruity filling.

Since we served this for Thanksgiving, we also added some apples to this cherry pie. It was sweet, sour and of course served warm with ice cream! You might notice it was quite dark when the pie came out of the oven, and if you look even closer, you’ll see when it was photographed the next day half of it was already eaten. It did not last long!

It was a 4-spoon pie. I think all-around, but I confess I don’t really remember. It was a long day of cooking and feasting with our friends. We had the traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings – stuffing, cranberry sauce and rolls (not to mention the appetizers we had out all day). I turned in before 9 p.m. that night (before the kids even!) exhausted and full. It was a perfect Thanksgiving.

This year we also had one more dish to celebrate the day. It’s my good friend’s family recipe, and it ties in nicely with our own heritage as well as to some of the places we’ll be traveling. We’ll be sharing that special family recipe very soon. In fact, Chef Dad may be making an appearance for this post!

Until then, here are the winners of our five-year anniversary/Thanksgiving giveaway. Thank you again to everyone that has popped in or followed along over the years. We’re very much looking forward to where the next five will take us! Now without further ado….Mr. N drew the names from a hat and Miss A drew the colorful announcements for the photos.

We are wheels up in less than five weeks now and as you can imagine my to-do lists are in full-swing. Many things (including getting our visas, booking our long stays, cleaning the house, etc.) have been crossed off the list, but there is still much to do. Not to mention we have lots of going away party plans, friend visits and of course, the holidays! Whew!

Later this week, we’ll be back with a delicious holiday appetizer recipe that’s not only perfect served with ice wine, it’s also cooked with ice wine! Until then, thank you all. We never expected to make such wonderful friends through our blogging adventures and we certainly didn’t expect a worldwide audience. You truly have helped to shape our blog, as well as our lives.

Cheers!

Squee! I could not be more excited to be the recipient of Eat Play Love’s Anniversary Cookbook! Thank you so much for the wonderful gift ~ I also want to thank Mr. N for drawing the names and Miss A for her beautiful artwork. Also can’t forget to thank my parents for… ;-). Kristy, your Thanksgiving sounds right up my alley; a delicious day spent in the company of close friends and an early retirement :o) . Apple cherry pie is the perfect capper on your pie series ~ I think it would have been a 4-spoon for me too. Good luck with all of your exciting preparations ~ you know I can relate in every way to the frenzy. It will all be worthwhile. Enjoy – thinking of all of you, x.

    Congrats to the winners!
I have cherries in my freezer waiting for my annual mid-January cherry pie. It’s one way to chase away the mid-winter blues. This year, I’ll be making mine with your crumble topping. Can’t wait!
Tell Miss A that I love her Cubs jersey. Just think. She may actually live to see the Cubs go to the World Series. I envy her generation. 🙂
