All Fired Up

Tonight we wrap up our adventure with the official recipes from Greenland. We do however have one more Greenlandic inspired dish coming your way, but I promise it will not involve halibut or a casserole. As for tonight’s recipe, well it’s one I had a sneaking suspicion we would enjoy – Mike and I anyway. This one is not for the kids.

You see tonight is the blog’s first “grown-up drink” recipe and who knew it would come from Greenland! Now you’ve probably heard of Irish Coffee, Mexican Coffee and Calypso Coffee, but have you heard of Greenlandic Coffee? Well, we had not until this little cooking adventure, but it will be a part of our repertoire from here on out.

The first thing that caught our eye about the drink, aside from the fact that Mike and I have been known to enjoy a Kahlua-laced coffee drink after many a dinner date, was the use of Grand Marnier. Now I have meant to buy a bottle of the stuff for quite some time. You see there are many delectable recipes I’ve wanted to try including these from Greg and Katherine at Rufus’ Food and Spirits Guide, and this one from Linda at Savoring Every Bite for which I fully intend to use Chicago John’s homemade mascarpone recipe. (I swear I’m going to give it a go John!) And then there was the fact that the drink is meant to resemble the Northern Lights. So, really, how could we go wrong?

We started with our liquors: Canadian Whiskey, Kahlua and Grand Marnier.

Next we grabbed some coffee – hey, who drank half the pot already?

And finally we whisked up some fresh whipped cream, grabbed a red wine glass and a lighter.

Then we had some fun. First we added one part whiskey. We used a Canadian blend – it’s close to Greenland right? And we heated the bottom of the cup with the flame. We’re not really sure what the point of this step is, but we did it anyway.

Next we set the Whiskey alight. Noticing a similarity to the Northern Lights yet? Just wait…

Once the flame burned out we added one part Kahlua and 3-1/3 parts black coffee (no sugar).

Next we spooned in a thick layer of freshly whipped cream. Really the homemade variety makes all the difference and doesn’t take that long to whip up. Trust us – do right by yourself and your guests. And finally, we poured one part Grand Marnier into a gravy spoon and lit it up.

We slowly poured the flaming Grand Marnier over the whipped cream and marveled out our little version of the Northern Lights.

We had a lot of fun making this recipe and definitely enjoyed it. Admittedly we’re big fans of after dinner coffee drinks, so it’s not a big surprise that we enjoyed the Greenlandic version. In fact we’d say it’s as good as any version that we’ve had, maybe even a bit better. In other words, this is a 4-spooner for both of us. It tasted great, makes a great after dinner drink and was a ton of fun to make – not to mention it redeems Greenland a bit in my eyes after the halibut casserole.

We hope you all have a great weekend and that you maybe even get to enjoy a little night-cap. We know we will be tomorrow night! As for our next international pick, well, it’s my turn and I’m going to leave you in suspense; but we will be back with a special post in honor of Passover on Sunday. So until then, bonus points if any of you CSI-wannabees out there can figure out what sports team’s logo Mike was donning today.

Hahahaha.. not sure we’re that close to Greenland, but appreciate your supporting our economy, even with a bottle of Canadian Whiskey;) I’ve been longing forever to see the Northern Lights and I think this just might be the only way it’s ever going to happen! I love this recipe!! The photos.. it’s a very cool drink and one to wow any guests that are over. Bonus.. it tastes great too! Can’t wait to try this one!! xo Smidge

What a lovely sipper. It really looks wonderful, and very relaxing :-). This is my first visit to your blog, so I spent some time browsing through your earlier posts. I am so glad I did that. You’ve created a great spot to visit and I really enjoyed the time I spent here. I’ll definitely be back. I hope you have a great day. Blessings…Mary

What a beautiful drink! I love the tie-in to the Northern Lights. I don’t often have an after dinner drink, but we entertain a few guests who really enjoy and is sometimes so difficult for me to decide how to host a more unique bar offering! You’ve given me what I need. I think I have all the ingredients just sitting there unused..I suppose it would be okay if I practiced, right? It is the weekend. Just followed you on Pinterest, too, Kristy! How fun for me! Debra

I’ll take an after dinner drink over dessert any time!! And this is so absolutely fun! I can’t wait to try this. I have all the ingredients on hand and I was going to say that I can’t wait to try this once I get settled, but now I’m thinking I need to slip this one in sooner – I’m sure it will help me relax and feel a bit of pleasure from all my stress!!

Yes, yes! I do notice the similarity to the Northern Lights! haha, that is way too cool. This drink sounds great, and it does look like you had a lot of fun making it. That first photo of the Northern Lights is incredible…looks fake! Wow.

Awesome drink! How I wish I could still drink like in the “early days” and not pay with a freaking hangover next day

but, I am very interested in the homemade mascarpone, had no idea one could do that at home… cool!

Is that an actual picture of the Northern Lights? How incredible. Greenland close to Canada? Sure, why not (most Americans think we live in igloos anyway, so all good ;-)). We love ‘special’ coffees too!! We have not indulged in ages but it was once a customary weekend enjoyment. Love the flame…. Sports Team? Oh dear. Are there professional broomball teams out there? 😉 – hmmm… I’m going with the Chicago Blackhawks (I’m guessing Mike’s retired his Habs jersey for the season 😦 – Go Sens Go!! :)).

That is a great post. I love the drink recipe but I also love the images. How pretty. They make the drink appear very magical. I might just have to go out this weekend and re-stock my liquor cabinet! xx

Haha, love that video – reminds me of this, from an British comedy, Red Dwarf, which was on TV some years ago – Enhance 😀

I love after dinner coffee drinks – I know I’d love this one for sure – love the photos showing the “boozy northern lights” 😀 I gotta say though, I can never be bothered to whip the cream if it’s just a little for coffee (by the way – you can use your immersion blender to whip it… it’s quite a stiff whip because it doesn’t get so much air inside but it’s fast and quick!). If the coffee is sweet enough you can just put a teaspoon upside down next to the coffee surface and pour cream over the back of the spoon and it’ll sit on the surface

    Have a great weekend Kristy!

Great post, and not just because you mentioned me and my blog. (Thanks for that, BTW.) That’s some drink – a real beauty! As for the jersey, I almost guessed Black Hawks but I’m going with Les Canadiens. That looks an awful lot like an “H” imbedded in a “C”. Of course I could be wrong — and probably am — but I did watch an awful lot of “Hockey Night in Canada” growing up. 🙂

Winner! Odd thing is, I’m a Blackhawks fan but picked it up on a trip to Canada a few years ago. I rarely wear the shirt out of the house, but last time I did a guy made a crack about it. Habs suck, or something like that. I chuckled, told him I wasn’t a Canadiens fan, I just had the shirt, and he said, that’s good, he was a Canucks fan.

      Well. That didn’t help things.
